Iowa Stanley Family Reunion 2005

October 1, 2005
Stuart, Iowa

Once again Iowa did its best to welcome twenty nine Stanleys, spouses and children in Iowa for the Annual Fall Iowa Stanley Reunion.  It was a sunny, warm October 1st as chatter, laughter and treats greeted the group at the Country Kitchen in Stuart, Iowa at 9:00 a.m.  You may view some pictures in the Photos section of this website.

Roberta Stanley Hoopes welcomed one and all.  She then introduced Ruth Stanley Kuntz and Herbert Standing.  All were invited and encouraged to attend the 2006 National Stanley Family Reunion to be held in June near West Branch, Iowa. Information will be forthcoming in the National Stanley Family Newsletter.

A gift from Lewis Savage to the INSFA was acknowledged with appreciation. The titles of the two essays are:

"An Iowa Quaker helps Restore the Old Fairfield Meeting House" and
"The Story of a Pioneer Quaker Miller in Iowa"

The three genealogical volumes of Hutchins and Hutchens by Rita Townsend were displayed. The latter two volumes were researched by Mr. Herbert Standing and are in the Earlham and Dallas Center public libraries and in the Iowa Historical Society in Des Moines, Iowa.

The 2005 project of the Iowa NSFA, "Volume II Descendants of William and Elizabeth Stanley", by Dr. Alvin Anderson is to be donated to the Iowa Historical Society in Des Moines, Iowa.  Donations from the group were appreciated.

Ruth Stanley Kuntz presented a video of Stanley sites in England with interesting details of Eyem Village and the plague that was responsible for 260 deaths.  Her knowledge of family genealogy was helpful and appreciated.

Following a time of eating and visiting, Mr. Herbert Standing was introduced.  His knowledge of the migration of the Stanleys from Virginia, the slavery question, and the underground railroad was evident in his presentation.  It was enjoyed by all.

Two o'clock found the group helping in packing up the items and heading for two cemeteries located east of Earlham.  Many Stanley markers were found and one of the participants was able to view her grandfather's grave for the first time.

The new members of the National Stanley Family Association are:
Dr. Wayne W. Cook and wife Eunice;  Elizabeth (Betty) Standley and husband Earl E.;  Charles L. Stanley and wife Rebecca J.;  James H. Stanley and wife Kathy;  John N. Williamson and wife Geri;  Diane Stanley Crawford;  Steve Stanley;  and George Stanley.  Welcome to all.  May you enjoy many happy years with the Association.

16th ANNUAL REUNION A GREAT SUCCESS!

Click on the links below for more information.

“Carry me back to old Viginny” was the theme song of some 90-plus Stanley 'cousins' as they gathered for their 16th annual Reunion in Ashland, Virginia to celebrate their family connectedness. Over a dozen U.S. States were represented, plus one couple who traveled from Australia! Hosted by an excellent Planning Team, the two-day event was held at Randolph-Macon College. The program was filled with tours to historic places, speakers relating Stanley family history in Hanover County, plus great food and entertainment. The Ashland area was chosen to highlight the location of an original Land Grant to THOMAS STANLEY (1) (early 1700’s) who was the American progenitor of the gathered descendents.
Highlights of the event included:

(1) Election of a new President PAUL L. STANLEY of Scottsdale, Arizona, a 9th Generation descendent of Thomas (1).
(2) Presentation of the annual STANLEY CUP AWARD to JUNE & EARL STANLEY for their outstanding service to the Stanley Association and to their community at large.
(3) The 2005 NSFA Annual Report presented by the President, Art Stanley.  Note: This report is very large (1,208 kB) and will take a long time to download with a dial-up connection. Also, you must be a member and logged into this website to access it.
(4) Foot-stomping and hand-clapping Bluegrass music by “THE WEST HANOVER BOYS” a group of local musicians that included some Stanley family members.
(5) A tour visit to the location of the original Cedar Creek Quaker Meeting House, located on land contributed by ancestor Thomas (1).
(6) A visual presentation of recent changes to our NSFA Website, including consideration of options for future development.
(7) Perusal and purchase of books and memorabilia related to Stanley Family history and heritage.

IF YOU WEREN’T ABLE TO ATTEND, WE MISSED YOU, AND WE HOPE THAT YOU PLAN TO BE WITH US NEXT YEAR!

Please stay tuned!!
