Ansalem Stanley and his brother Joseph Stanley were the first Stanleys to come to Iowa. In 1838, at the age of twenty-one years, Ansalem started for Iowa with his brother and four other young men. They proceeded down the Ohio River, then up the Mississippi River to Fort Madison, Iowa, and then rode across the countryside to Salem Township in Henry County. Later Ansalem married, raised children and attended the Salem Monthly Meeting of Friends that was founded in 1838.
More Stanleys arrived in the following years starting in 1843 from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. They helped settle the new territory and provided land and homes for their children.
The prairie grass no longer stands as tall as a man's head riding on a horse. The land no longer sells for $1.60 per acre, but the Stanleys remain and their children continue to contribute to the fine life style available here. They also provide land and homes for their children.
On June 23 and 24, 2006 the National Stanley Family Association will come to Iowa, too. Cousins across the nation will gather and renew friendships and meet new cousins. The reunion will be held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the Gage Memorial Union, at 1220 First Avenue NE.

| TOURS:
The following tours are planned plus some cemetery visits in West Branch: |
| |
|
|
|
Herbert Hoover Presidential Library/Museum in West Branch, Iowa is located just to the north of Exit 254 off Interstate 80. On Friday afternoon, Matthew Schaefer, Outreach Archivist for the Library, will speak to our group. We will tour the museum, the library, Herbert Hoover's birthplace, and the Hoovers' gravesite.
Scattergood Friends School is located 2 miles east and 1/2 mile south of West Branch, IA. Our tour on Saturday begins at 9:30 a.m. when Margie Figgins, Director of Development, will speak to us on this unusual co-ed high school/boarding school. We will tour the campus, the farm (optional), the old Hickory Grove cemetery nearby, and Hickory Grove Meeting House. This meeting house is the original one of the Iowa Friends Conservative Meeting and is actively used by Scattergood School.
Saturday afternoon, after a box lunch provided by Coe College, on a hopefully beautiful June day we will visit two West Branch Friends meeting houses and possibly two cemeteries. Stanley-related graves will be decorated with garden flowers. |
